Tuesday Tales – Flying

Badge for TT - very small

Hi everyone and welcome to Tuesday Tales.  I am taking a brief break from Gideon (I’m sorry!) to finish the current WIP I’ve been working on.  It is Breaking the Silence (Hard Drive Series #2), the sequel to Breaking the Cycle.

Rico Choate is a MMA bad boy with a love them and leave them attitude.  That is until he meets Avery Walker, a deaf Marine who lost her hearing when her transport is attacked in Afghanistan.  He falls hard for her, even learning sign language so he can talk to her.  However, Avery’s hatred for all celebrities forces Rico to keep his career in mixed martial arts a secret.  How long can he keep such huge parts of his life separate?

Avery stood at the corner, waiting patiently for the bus to arrive.  She let go a huge yawn.  Getting up at five in the morning to open the coffee shop was miserable.  It was even more miserable for Lindsay who had to get up to drive her to work.  But it was Monday and her classes started at one in the afternoon.  It was the only way to get decent hours.

She looked to the trees above her and watched the birds flying from branch to branch.  She did miss listening to them sing.  She closed her eyes and felt the sun on her face.  Her thoughts drifted her date on Saturday.  Her heart ached.  It had been two days since she had seen Rico and she missed him.  They texted all day Sunday which she think shocked him.  He never realized a deaf girl would have a cell phone.  Texting him was nothing like being with him.

With a sigh Avery opened her eyes to look for the bus.  It should be there by now.  She startled, her eyes growing wide.  Instead of the bus, Rico sat at the corner in his Jeep with a wide grin on his face.

Can I take you to class? he signed.

She glanced from him to the bus waiting impatiently behind him.  She nodded excitedly as she hopped into the passenger seat and kissed him on the cheek.  He reached across and took her hand in his.  This surprise was better than she could hope for.

At the first stop light, he turned to her.  He brushed a lock of hair behind her ear.  You look tired.

I have been up since five.  Lindsay probably looks worse.  He had to get up to take me.

Rico frowned.  I have to be at work at six.  I could take you to work.

You would drive out of your way to take me to work?

She smiled at him as the light changed.  How could she say no?

I am so excited to share another excerpt of Breaking the Silence (Hard Drive Series #2).  Now that we’ve met our beautiful heroine, it’s time to find out why she won’t talk to Rico…

“Yes. I’d like an iced tea, please,” Chloe ordered with a smile.

“And for the gentleman with you?” The barista pointed her pencil over Chloe’s shoulder. She cast a glance back at Rico, noticing him bopping and weaving to see who was working. He almost looked like he was in the octagon. She shook her head and turned back to the girl taking her order. “Nope. He’s just tagging along with me.”

The girl smirked at her. “Your boyfriend is cute.”

“He’s not my boyfriend. More like an annoying brother.”

“Oh. Too bad.” The girl winked past her then typed on the cash register. Chloe could tell by the motion behind her Rico never picked up on the flirting. Or if he did, he didn’t care. This really must be some girl.

She paid for her drink then took a step back. She felt the sudden pain of an elbow in her spine. “She’s right there,” Rico hissed in her ear.

Chloe glared at him then slowly looked to where he nodded. It was hard to watch without being obvious. She studied the blonde barista as the girl took the order from the cashier. She stepped to the cooler to pull out a jug of dark liquid then fetched a plastic glass. She added ice cubes then poured the tea into the glass. She capped it with a lid and set it on the counter. Chloe approached with a smile, then subtly moved her fingers in the direction of the barista. The blonde’s smile blossomed across her face as her raised her hand and her fingers also moved. Chloe picked up the glass and a straw then turned towards the door. She was nearly to the truck when Rico caught up with her.

“That was it? You didn’t even talk to her!” he demanded.

Chloe turned to him. “Yes, I did.”

“I didn’t see you speak to her.”

“Rico, you didn’t notice?”

“Notice what?”

“That girl, Avery, is deaf.”

Tuesday Tales – Savage

Badge for TT - very small

Happy Tuesday!  It’s once again time for Tuesday Tales!  Today’s word prompt is “savage”.  We are back with our untitled Steampunk romance.  When we left last week, Gideon was rushing a poisoned Emma to his home to save her.  Will he make it?

And don’t forget to check out the incredible excerpts from other very talented Tuesday Tales authors!

The frigid savage night wind whipped around Gideon as he shuffled quickly through the dark alleys of London.  He kept the lifeless Emma clutched close to him as he wove through the streets.  His hand brushed her arm.  Her skin was growing deathly cold.  He had no time to waste.

He shoved through the door of his town house, breathing in the warm air as he gently laid her on his bed.  He dashed to his work bench, gathering the items he needed for the healing potion.  He lit a candle then after tugging on a pair of thick, leather gloves, poured the allotted amounts of each substance into a jar.  He warmed the glass with the candle until the contents turned into a thick green liquid.  He poured the potion into a mug then returned to her side.

Carefully propping Emma’s fragile frame in his arms, Gideon pressed the rim of the cup to her lips, tipping it back until a bit of the liquid touched her tongue.  He gave her a bit more.  Then just a bit more.  Suddenly her limp body came to life and she began to drink.  He helped her finish the mug then laid her back down, tucking the comforter around her to keep her warm.

Gideon stoked the fire in the fireplace then slumped into a nearby chair to watch her sleep.  Emma betrayed him.  Then she confessed to Katarina that she loved him.  He didn’t know whether he could put his trust in her.  He reached behind him for the throw draped on his chair then wrapped it around himself.  He studied her.  She would be asleep for quite a while as her body freed itself of the poison.  When she woke and was strong, he would get some answers from her.  No matter what it took.

Turns out the Kaufmann Clock was this old, gold clock with naked Grecian men on either side of it. It`s a damned impressive clock that is a Pittsburgh landmark I would learn later. It seems that it is quite the thing to meet someone under this over one hundred year old clock. It was where I found Cam, bundled up in a thick blue parka, sipping a hot beverage. The corner of Fifth Avenue and Smithfield Street was pretty quiet. I pulled up in front of Macy`s, parked, then jogged over to Cameron.

“You could have picked somewhere warmer to meet,” I said. Cam began walking. I fell in beside him.

“Like where?” the man asked, his face nearly concealed by the huge hood over his head. “Tell me one damned place in this town that we could meet to talk without someone knowing it was us.”

I padded along beside him with no reply for his comment. He was right. Everyone knew his face in ‘The Burgh’. The longer we walked the more I accepted that I would freeze to death. We made two complete laps in total silence. Cam stopped to drop his empty coffee cup into a trash can. We stood under a street light, our breath twin clouds of steam hovering in front of us.

“You have to understand that this . . . I don`t know how to go about . . . shit.” He stuffed his hands into the pockets of his parka. Again we started walking.

“Look man, if I knew for sure what we were dealing with, maybe I could help a little better,” I said. A biracial couple hurried past us. I burrowed into my flimsy coat until all that stuck out of the collar were my eyes.

“I have a daughter. She`s a senior in high school.”

“Awesome,” I mumbled into my coat. My forehead was extremely cold. Like ice cream eaten too fast cold. We kept walking that block.

“She is awesome.” I peeked over at him. I wished he would drop that fucking hood so I could see his face. “And not aware of how things were with her mother and me.”

“How things were or how you were pretending they were?” I chanced it. What the hell? He would either slug me, call me a mother-fucker, or stalk off. Whatever happened it had to be better than roaming around this fucking city block when the temperature was a balmy four degrees. “I mean, that is what your dancing around, right? That you`re so far back in the closet you just discovered Narnia? Why not just admit that much to yourself before we both succumb to fucking hypothermia.”

I should have known that Cameron Evans was a man of action. I mean, I followed his career all though my school years. He was fast. My back was against the wall under that old clock before I could register the shove. Cam then got all sorts of in my face. I did not raise my hands. His angry exhalation was flavored with vanilla.

“Are you calling me a queer?” I shrugged one shoulder.

“I call them as I see them. Now, you can either step off or you can kiss me.” I threw the challenge out without a second thought. I stared into the shelter of his hood, finding his dark eyes in the shadows. They flickered down to my blue lips. “Whatever you decide to do, do it fast. I`m cold, tired, and hungry.”

He did. He captured my mouth with a kiss so aggressive my teeth ground into my lips. Yeah. This was it. This was what I had been pushing him to do . . . hoping he would do. His hands slapped to the wall on either side of my head. I grabbed his hooded head then ran my tongue over his bottom lip. The tempting taste of his latte lingered on his tongue. Then he lost the fingertip hold he had found on the slippery slope of sexual honesty. Cam stumbled backwards. I remained flat to the wall, my lips warmed nicely. He threw horrified looks up then down the street.

“Cam, man, it`s okay. It is okay to kiss a dude on the street. It is totally acceptable.”

“No one knows.” He pulled his hood even further over his face.

“Then tell them. Go to your daughter, tell her. Tell your ex-wife, unless she already knows?”

“No, she doesn`t know, but she suspected. I need more time to . . . think this through.”

“Cam, don`t you think you`ve lived a lie long enough, dude?” I asked as he retreated further into his parka.

“It`s so much easier to hide in the dark,” he murmured then he left me under the clock, back flat to the wall, lips tender from our kiss.

Tuesday Tales – Lemon

Badge for TT - very small

Happy Tuesday!  It’s once again time for Tuesday Tales!  Today’s word prompt is “lemon”.  We are back with our untitled Steampunk romance.  When we left last week, Emma was trapped in Gideon’s humidor.  Will she die?

And don’t forget to check out the incredible excerpts from other very talented Tuesday Tales authors!

Gideon watched through the crack in the door as Katarina and the two men descend the staircase.  Once they disappeared he slipped through the doorway and silently approached the humming humidor.  His heart raced in terror.  Emma was inside.  Dying.  And he built this contraption to be indestructible.

Except for one sensitive spot.  Gideon created each piece of the humidor by hand.  He even blew the glass for the window.  But as hard as he tried, the glass never came out strong enough to withstand a blow.  There was always a weak spot.

He reached down to his boot and pulled free the pistol he kept there since he began walking Emma home.  He quickly scanned the glass then aimed and fired.  The glass shattered into thousands of shards.  The humidor quickly died and the door popped open.

Gideon held his breath as he stepped inside, finding Emma slumped lifeless on the floor.  He scooped her into his arms and carried her to fresh air.  He searched for breath or a heartbeat.  Both were weak.  He cradled her safely in his arms before he snuck back into the servant’s staircase and descended to the main floor.

He scanned the corridors for signs of life.  He pondered the situation.  He needed to get home quickly.  He could brew the remedy to the poison there.  But carrying an unconscious woman through the streets of London would attract attention he could not afford.

His eyes fell on a lemon colored throw draped on the back of a chaise lounge in the library.  He scuttled across the corridor then set Emma down on the chaise long enough to secure the blanket around her.  Once she was bundled inside he gathered her in his arms and hurried through the servant’s quarters until he was outside.  Holding Emma close he stole through the midnight black towards his home.

Sneak Peek Sunday

Sneak Peek Sunday Banner

I missed last Sunday’s Sneak Peek and I was bummed.  I am so excited to share another excerpt of Breaking the Silence (Hard Drive Series #2).  My last two posts have been about our bad boy MMA fighter, Rico Choate.  Now, it’s about time to meet our beautiful, strong heroine…

Black and red boxing gloves

He stepped into the small shop with a gleaming smile. He glanced around. The dark stained shelves were lined with mugs, bags of coffee and other trinkets. Another set of shelves were lined with books for patrons to read. Sofas and overstuffed chairs were scattered among tables with mismatched chairs. Sitting on those chairs and sofas were lovely ladies already cooing at his presence. He laughed. I might just have to get a date or two before I leave.

Rico sauntered to the counter where a tall, lanky redhead waited to take his order. After paying for a cup of coffee, he stepped back, winking at a girl sipping on a glass of iced tea. His eyes raked over her as she giggled. He grinned then glanced up behind the counter.

He lost his breath. He felt his pulse pick up a notch. The last thing on earth he believed in was love at first sight. But at the moment he was a true convert.

The barista behind the counter barely came to his chest and he was six foot, one inch. Her long, blonde hair wisped in curls around her shoulders. Her frame was small with the most perfect curves in all the right places. Her lips were a soft, very kissable pink. And when she looked up at him to hand him the cup of coffee, her eyes glittered a clear, sapphire blue. She set the cup of coffee on the counter with a smile. Then she turned to fulfill the next order.

She never said one word to him. Him. Rico Choate. MMA superstar Rico Choate. His picture was on posters, in magazines.

And she didn’t say one word. He was baffled. He picked up the cup and rushed out the door. It wasn’t until he parked his truck at Hard Drive that he realized he hadn’t gotten one number from any of the women in the shop.
