It seemed to take an eternity for Gideon to forge his path through the crowd. His heart hammered in his ears blocking out the sounds of praise surrounding him. His feet scuttled across the smooth floor as he broke free from the last clinging hand. He picked up his pace as he dashed through the halls of the mansion.

A low moan stopped him dead in his tracks. Puzzled he began searching. The sound seemed to come out of thin air. Gideon tugged one door open after another, his hand nearly tearing off each ornamental knob embedded in its wood door. He pried open the final lined closet at the end of the hall then instantly dropped to his knees.

Edgar was slumped inside. Trails of crimson weaved paths across his skin from the gashes left on his face. His entire body was badly beaten.

“Edgar,” Gideon murmured in horror. He tore his handkerchief from the pocket of his coat and dabbed at his best friend’s wounds.

“Leave me.” Edgar waved him away.

“I cannot,” Gideon insisted.

“You must. Katarina has Emma. She’s going to kill your lass.”

“Where?”

“The library.”

Gideon stood. “I’ll be back for you.”

“Nonsense. I’ll meet you outside. Go.”

Gideon nodded quickly before he sprinted to the grand staircase. He climbed the endless staircases two steps at a time. As he reached the top of the last staircase, he found the library doors closed. He frowned. Had Edgar been delusional?

A terrified scream from inside erased Gideon’s doubt. It was followed by a deep, evil laugh. His heart seized in his chest. Emma. He reached for the gilded doorknob and twisted it hard, throwing it open as he did so.
