Sworn to Protect

Sworn to Protect

Susanne Matthews

Four years ago, a car accident robbed Nancy Frost of her child and her mother, taking what was left of her marriage with it in the process. A forensic accountant, she agrees to look at a company’s books in a divorce case, trying to find hidden assets, but her meeting with the lawyer goes terribly wrong when the restaurant is attacked.

The moment US Marshal Neil Copeland discovers his wife has been shot in a Baltimore restaurant, he rushes to her side, determined not to let her down again. As the police investigate, evidence suggests the attack was a ploy to hide a specific hit. When a professional assassin tries to kill Nancy a second time, it’s clear that she was the target and whatever’s going on is a lot more complicated than they think.

When Nancy awakes after a month in an induced coma, not only does she not remember the attack on the restaurant, she doesn’t remember marrying Neil.

Faced with the challenge of protecting his wife from a powerful, faceless enemy, Neil must bring her up to date, dredging up all the sorrow that tore them apart in the first place, hoping something will jar her memory.

As he races against time, can he save her from an unknown assassin and convince her to give the love they once had a second chance?

Excerpt:

“You’re firing me right now? Without any notice? You can’t do that,” she whispered, so shocked she could barely speak.

This couldn’t be happening. Her heart thundered in her ears as the reality of the situation sunk in. How would she pay her bills? She’d refused alimony from Neil. Sure she had a few personal tax clients and could always do more forensic accounting work for Meredith and some of the other lawyers, but those jobs were hit or miss. Three years of her life down the drain just like that. She wasn’t the low man on the totem pole, so why cut her, why let her go?

“I can assure you we can, and we have. Don’t make this any harder than it needs to be. I’m sure with your abilities you’ll find work elsewhere.” He glared at her.

What on Earth had she done to piss him off this way?

“Will I at least be getting a letter of recommendation?” She’d need one to find another job.

“By all means. Mrs. Willis has it ready for you. You can pick it up with your check. Good day, Ms. Frost.”

“I’m sorry, Nancy,” Clive said, opening the door for her, his thin lips drawn in a smug smile.

“You bastard!” She spat the words at him. “Just because I wouldn’t sleep with you is no reason to feed me to the dogs. I could sue you for sexual harassment.”

“Don’t flatter yourself.” He looked down his nose at her as if she were some kind of bug. “And as far as suing me,” he said, chuckling, his sapphire gaze boring into her. “It’s your word against mine.”

Shaken by the icy animosity in his voice, she swallowed her retort. “Who will take care of my clients?” she asked, grasping at straws. “I should talk to them and bring them up to date.”

“I’ll look after them, and believe it or not, I can do the job as well as you can.” He dismissed her, entering his office without a backward glance.

“This way,” the goon reached for her arm again, and she yanked it away.

“Touch me again, and you’ll regret it,” she hissed. “I know where my office is.”

Mustering all the dignity she could, Nancy led the way back to the small space she’d called her own. In her absence, someone had emptied her desk and packed up her photographs and other memorabilia. The partially filled box sat in the center of her blotter.

“If you’ll put your arms out at your side, I’ll search you.”

Gritting her teeth, her cheeks burned.

“Oh no, you won’t. I warned you what will happen if you put your paws on me again. There are no pockets in this skirt or jacket, and I’m not about to let you cop a feel,” she ground out, her chest heaving in her fury.

No Good Deed

No Good Deed

Susanne Matthews

Psychological chills and thrills are woven around a heartwarming love story in this action-packed romantic suspense novel.

Escaping from her abusive fiancé, Alexa O’Brien pulls into a gas station only to walk in on an execution. She’s in protective custody until she can identify Nicoli Zabat, Montreal’s mob boss, at his trial. But her safe house has been compromised, setting in motion a dangerous cat-and-mouse game.

Lieutenant Mike Delorme on the Sûreté Du Québec has spent the last eighteen months undercover in narcotics to take down Zabat, the man he blames for the death of his wife and unborn child. He doesn’t have the interest or patience to babysit a woman whose memory isn’t clear—but he’ll carry out his assignment to show the brass he’s a team player.

As Mike and Alexa dodge danger, it appears she’s in deeper than merely being in the wrong place at the wrong time. When the mafia hit she witnessed is revealed to be just the tip of an international terrorist’s plot, they must rely on each other to survive—but only if they can learn to trust their instincts and let love map out their next move.

Excerpt from No Good Deed

Alexa O’Brien white-knuckled the steering wheel, her foot barely touching the accelerator as she followed the taillights of the pickup truck ahead of her. She didn’t dare stay any farther back. If she did, she wouldn’t see the guiding lights at all and would end up in the ditch. Of course, if the truck went off the road, she would be up Shit Creek without a paddle.

She snorted, fluttering her lips. “Damn you, Mother Nature. You’re supposed to be on my side.”

The tires on the old wreck she’d bought were almost as bald as her stepfather had been. What a lecture he would give her if he could see her now. Another man who’d claimed he knew what was best for her. In this case, he was probably right, but he’d been wrong too many times to count. It was her life—her mistakes to make—and while some of them had been doozies, she’d taken control once more.

Pray God she didn’t have to brake suddenly.

She’d planned her escape so carefully, timed it to coincide with Richard’s trip to Africa, and now this. Where the hell had a foot of snow come from? It was the middle of April. Even in Canada, that meant spring.

The distance between her car and the vehicle ahead shortened. Alexa eased up on the accelerator. What was she doing? Twenty miles per hour? Maybe twenty-five?

The lights ahead turned a deeper red. She was coming up on the truck too fast.

“Holy shit!”

She moved her foot from the gas pedal to the brake, pumping the pedal twice, but it didn’t help. She screeched. Like Bambi on ice, the car swerved, spun around twice, and then skidded to the right. Time stood still—the car didn’t.

Excerpt

Eve gritted her teeth as her bike dipped and bounced around on the dirt road up through the dense forest. Despite the presence of so many pine trees, the ground was nearly covered with fallen leaves. Even though the carpet of reds, golds, and oranges was beautiful in the twilight glow, she nearly wiped out on her motorcycle three times. Shit. This is going to be a bitch when the snow falls. And I’m not about to go buy a car. Not that I’m moving here. But if I did, no car.

The urge for Micah that typically filled her resonated harder than it ever had. Her whole body was on fire, and he was the only cure. She could already feel his lips on her skin, his teeth nipping at her breast. She needed him now. His ridiculous talk about her being his mate didn’t matter. Maybe his lack of sex has made him delusional. I can fix that.

She glanced around at the thick forest that surrounded her. This trail had jostled her for nearly an hour. She couldn’t be going in the right direction. Where the hell had Micah gone? She was going to get lost in these woods and die, and he’d never find her.

She breathed a sigh of relief as the trees opened up to reveal a large clearing. She pulled to a stop and parked her bike next to a row of old antique cars and trucks. She did a double take. Even in the light of the full moon, they were easy to recognize. They were the same vehicles that were down at Sharky’s Garage. She dismounted from her bike as she scanned the scene before her. There were nine buildings made out of interlocking logs. Seven were nearly identical. One was a bit bigger. The final one was over a hundred feet long. There was no doubt in her mind the place must have been a summer camp at one point. On the other side of the clearing were several wooden box gardens filled only with dirt and a few sprigs left over from the harvest. Near the tree line were two tall wooden and metal towers with equipment mounted on the top. The place was sort of bizarre. Micah lives here so far away from the rest of civilization? No wonder he was a virgin before he met me.

She took a couple of steps toward the middle of the camp and then froze. Did she hear something? It sounded like a dog. There was a shuffle against the ground before she heard the deep, heavy pant behind her. It was accompanied by a snarl. Her heart clenched in her chest, almost driving the desire out of her. She slowly turned to face whatever large, angry animal cornered her.

She gasped in terror as she laid eyes on the beast. On all fours, it was taller than her. It was covered in coarse, brown fur. Razor sharp fangs shot up past its upper lip. Thick claws pawed the ground angrily. It snorted and stomped just before it charged.

Eve screamed as a second beast, bigger and stronger than the first, collided into it, knocking it to the ground. She backpedaled away from the monsters to slam into a third, even larger than the first two. It growled deeply before it padded to the second one. The two of them made a horrifying wall of feral, nightmarish animal blocking her from her bike.

Eve spun on her toe to sprint away. She needed to run fast and far from this nightmare. Instead, she found herself face to face with a fourth. Her fear went to war with her need for sex. She watched the fourth beast strain to focus on her. With what sounded like a sigh to her, the creature leaned in and nudged her. The touch sent delicious shivers through her. She shook her head. What the hell was happening to her?

She backed away from the unholy pack toward the rows of cabins. The fourth followed beside her, guiding her toward one in particular. When she tried to run, to deviate from the path, it herded her back on course. She studied the structure. It was the second one in from the larger ones.

The beast followed as she climbed the steps and scurried through the little building. The sound of shredding wood followed her. She looked frantically for a way out but found none. She was trapped. She would be an easy kill for this thing now. Glancing at the door of the bathroom, she took off for it. The room was far too small for the animal to get into. It was her only hope.

She made it to the shower before she turned to find the beast in the doorway of the bathroom. Eve’s knees gave out. She crumpled to the tile floor, shaking. It huffed as it raised a dangerous claw to her. It didn’t slash at her. Instead, it caught the door knob. In one quick, sharp motion, it slammed the door closed.

Attorney Geneva Lang has the right pedigree and attended the preferred Ivy League school. Hell, she even has the right last name to become a partner at the Lawrence and Larringer Law Firm. Nothing will stop her from climbing to the top. Well maybe one thing—the older partners would like to see her married. In a modern world, surely a woman doesn’t need a man behind her to be taken seriously?

Now her mother and friends are tossing men at her like confetti. She doesn’t want them shoved down her throat any more than she welcomes the men she works with hitting on her—whether they make six figure salaries or not. Just when she doesn’t think this month could get more annoying, she ends up in a traffic accident.
Liam Hart takes his job seriously. Almost so seriously that he almost didn’t look up from the mangled body of the Lexus and missed the gorgeous woman in a power suit standing in front of him. One look at the woman and he wants to peel off her hose and throw her legs over his shoulders. But first he needs to make her remember she’s a woman—with needs. Lucky for her he knows how.
Despite the fact that she’s falling for a hunk who is great with his hands—in bed and out—everyone believes she’s having a fling. Why is it so hard to believe a woman like her would fall for a blue-collar man? Their opposite lifestyles can’t possibly tear them apart, can they?

Tuesday Tales – Glass

IMG_0075-0

Hey everyone! It’s time for Tuesday Tales. Ok, I fibbed last time. This is our last week with Sloan and Abbey in Family Ties. They are still on the hunt to find their daughter Ame and her friend Dakota who were abducted by men working for the Butcher.

The whiskey burned as it slid down Sloan’s throat. The sensation brought comfort. He slammed the shot glass down on the oak stained bar then motioned to the bartender for another.

Words swirled around his head. No matter how hard he tried he couldn’t make them go away. He could hear both Liam and Gordon forbid him from having a family. It was dangerous. They would be used for collateral. He could hear Abbey accuse him of this whole mess.

She didn’t need to. The moment he realized Ame was gone he blamed himself. He had every second since. “You were right, lads,” he mumbled to himself. “Getting married, falling in love. Huge mistake.”

“How many have you had?” a deep voice from behind chastised. Robert slumped onto the barstool beside him.

“Five,” Sloan said just before slamming another shot of whiskey. He set the glass in his hand on the bar beside the others. That’s six.”

“How is getting drunk going to rescue the kids?”

“Everything else we tried failed. Why not try this?” Sloan waved to the bartender for another.

Robert stood and stopped the man. “Ginger ale.”

“What the bloody hell are you doing?” Sloan demanded.

“Stopping you from making a huge mistake,” Robert answered simply. “What happened?”

Sloan exhaled slowly. “Abbey blamed me for Ame’s abduction. Gordon and Liam warned me about a family. I should have listened.”

“So you’re saying you wished you never met Abbey?”

Sloan sat in silence. “No. There is no life without her. Hearing her accuse me with such hate…” His words trailed off as he shook his head.

“We’ll find Ame, Sloan.” Robert looked at him, puzzled. “Where’s that photo you found in Prague?”

Sloan dug in his pocket and slapped it on the table. Robert picked it up to study it. After a few seconds he started laughing.

“What’s so funny?” Sloan questioned.

“I know why your wife came unglued.”

Sloan took a sip of the ginger ale. “Enlighten me.”

Robert flipped the picture around towards him. “It’s you and Heidi.”

“I know. I have no idea how the Butcher got that picture. I’m pretty sure that’s the only time we were within a hundred feet of each other in public. It was certainly the only time we were affectionate.”

“Right. You were affectionate. She saw a couple in love. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Abbey insecure and jealous. Did you see it tonight?”

A smirk graced Sloan’s lips. “Aye. I’m surprised I didn’t recognize that little demon when it struck.”

“Like I said, it’s been awhile. She’s upset over the abduction. But the idea of you happily in another woman’s arms? That’s really your issue.”

Tuesday Tales – Writing

Time slipped away quickly as Ame studied for her chemistry test. She had a crazy knack for the subject and loved it. If she aced this test tomorrow she had a great chance to end the year with an “A”. The only break she took was to have a supper of spaghetti, meatballs and garlic knots with everyone. She giggled as she watched the men she knew as her uncles perch on armchairs in the living room while they shoveled the pasta into their mouths just so their wives and children had a place to sit. The whole scene made her wonder. Would life ever go back to the way it was? Once she finished eating she tossed her plate into the sink of dishes her grandmother was already washing and scampered back to her room.

It was nearly nine o’clock when her cell rang. After writing a couple notes on her paper, Ame checked the screen. “Dakota,” she murmured. Her heart pounded in her chest as she silenced it. She couldn’t help the crush she had on him. But after seeing him with Chelsea she didn’t want to talk to him.

A few seconds later it rang again. With an irritated huff she silenced it again.

When it rang again she answered it. “What do you want, Dakota?”

“Hello, sweetheart.”

Ame nearly dropped the phone as every part inside her clenched in fear. This wasn’t Dakota. She knew his warm, sweet voice. The person who spoke was cold, devious, adult. She gasped as she recognized him. It’s the guy with the knife from school! Mom and Dad said his name is Oliver. “How did you get Dakota’s phone?” she demanded.

“Your little friend and I have been having a little talk. I think you should come join us.”

“No way. I don’t even know if he’s really there.”

“Really?” She heard the phone go distant. Then she heard Oliver talk. “I think your little girlfriend  wants to talk to you.”

There was silence for nearly a minute then a pain-filled gasp. “Ame, hang up please,” Dakota cried out.

Ame fought back a whimper. “Where are you?”

“On the other end of the lake behind your house,” Oliver responded.

“Fine. Let me sneak out. I’ll be right there.”

“Hurry, sweetheart. I wouldn’t want to hurt him again.”

“Don’t,” she pleaded just before the line went dead. She scrambled off her bed and slipped her shoes back on. She slowly opened her bedroom door. Even though her parents and six siblings had bedrooms on this floor, not one of them was upstairs. Silently she jogged down the back staircase and out the door to the garage.

Her heart stampeded in her chest as she ran alongside the lake. Her head filled with doubt. Did Oliver really have Dakota? How did he know who Dakota was? She tried to remember the television reports over the thud of her footsteps and the thundering of her heartbeat. She gasped as she remembered. Yes, one report showed Dakota with her and her grandparents, right before she ran to her father’s arms.

He’s in danger because of me!

Tuesday Tales – Picture Prompt

Stepping outside of the school. Ame was stunned to find her father’s Hummer outside waiting for her. Sloan sat behind the steering wheel, his eyes focused on the tablet in his hand, a bouquet of roses and a box of chocolates sitting on the dash. Both teenage girls and mothers alike stopped to stare at him. Ame pushed past the slowly growing crowd. “Dad, what are you doing here?”

Sloan frowned, confused, at the females gathered behind her. A slow grin curved his lips. Obviously he doesn’t mind the attention. “Your mom was taking a nap. I thought I’d come instead. You know, since your little secret isn’t much of a secret anymore. Hurry up and get in. Your siblings are waiting.”

“Right.” Ame scuttled around the vehicle and jumped in the passenger side. Sloan slowly pulled from the curb and wound down the lane to the next building. “So, how was school?” he asked.

“Everyone knows I lied. So you can come to my events now.”

“Sorry, Angel.”

“It’s not your fault. I shouldn’t have lied. It’s just, if everyone knew I was your daughter, they would treat me like I was privileged because you’re rich.”

“Amelia, you need to be yourself. Money shouldn’t affect how you act. That’s what I’ve been trying to teach you.”

“I know. That’s what I sort of told the entire school.”

Sloan glanced at her from the corner of his eye. “Really?”

“Yeah. Someone filmed it and put it on YouTube. I think they thought I was going to throw a punch instead.” She pulled her cell from the pocket of her jacket and found the video. Then she handed the phone to him. Sloan parked the Hummer in front of the elementary school then pressed play. A proud smile filled his face. “That’s my lass.”
